English Concertina

Peter Donald, Glasgow, 1980s
As an English concertina player, Frances has a long-standing interest in the instrument, its players, and associated repertoires. In 2009 she travelled to Hamilton, on the outskirts of Glasgow, to interview two concertina players, Gordon Haxton and Peter Donald. Peter had been playing concertina for over seventy years!

Both men were actively involved in the mission halls of Glasgow during the twentieth century, and played concertina alongside many others to accompany evangelical hymn singing in the halls and processions through Glasgow's streets. They have distinctive playing styles, and use techniques which are not heard among concertinists who perform traditional music.
